Cisterna Castle dates back to the 13th century and it is built above the Puglia River. Property of the Perugia territory until 1378, it was the castle lit by the highest number of candles: it is said that for the feast of Sant'Ercolano, the inhabitants of the surrounding lands had to send three pounds of wax to Perugia. In 1412 the castle was purchased by Ugolino III Trinci. Pope Gregory XII, with an act passed in July 1412, granted the castle in vicariate to the Trinci family upon payment of an annual fee and after the stipulation of loyalty and justice pacts. In 1414 central Italy and Umbria were invaded by the army of Ladislaus of Anjou, king of Naples. Ugolino III made an agreement with the Florentines and passed under their jurisdiction. The Cisterna Castle remained the property of the Trinci family until 1441 when their reign came to an end; at that time the place had 118 inhabitants. In 1802 the castle came under the Gualdo Cattaneo municipality territories, and then it became part of the San Terenziano municipality, formerly one of the Collazzone sovereignties but independent since 1829. Finally, in 1861, it was rejoined Gualdo Cattaneo. Today the castle is well preserved; its tall medieval tower is well visible and adjacent to it is  a village that dates back to the 1800s.
