Pomonte belonged to the Counts of Antignano. (The county of Antignano, a castle situated in the hills of Bevagna, included several estates located between Bevagna and Gualdo Cattaneo). In 1305 the representatives of the Pomonte Castle were called "ad parlamentum" in the cathedral of Foligno to try to cease the hostilities against the rector Deoticlezio de Loiano, at that time in charge of the Duchy of Spoleto. In 1318 the castle inhabitants revolted against the Guelphs refusing to pay taxes and to defend the church with their weapons, proclaiming themselves as followers of Count Federico da Montefeltro who was raging in Umbria. In 1322 the castle was subjugated and made a tributary field of Todi. The ancient fortress, built by Albornoz and now in ruins is located in the immediate surroundings of Pomonte. Downstream of the fortress a fortified structure built in 1415 by Pope Gregory XII is still clearly visible and in good condition. In 1421, Pomonte came under the vicariate of Trinci with Corrado XV. In 1451 it was given as a fief to the Crispolti family of Bettona who maintained the property until 1658 when they returned to Holy See. In 1943 the castle was chosen by the Germans as accommodation for the commando and the following year it was object of the partisan group action that took away all the material requisitioned by the German army. Today the castle stands majestically on a hill, surrounded by lush vegetation. It has a quadrilateral structure, with small towers at the corners with counterscarp half the height of the building.
