Speltara castle

Along the road between San Terenziano and Collazzone stands this old abandoned manor, with a square layout and unique and high corner tower, surrounded by strong walls. The earliest records of it date back to the thirteenth century, when Speltara was under the jurisdiction of San Terenziano. Its name may have derived from the cultivation of spelled wheat of the grass family, which is similar to wheat and later called spelt (the Italian farro). Speltara followed the historical events of Gualdo Cattaneo and of its neighboring territories, alternately becoming a stronghold of Perugia, an outpost of Braccio Fortebracci and a possession of the town of Todi. The castle, tall and massive, has a large courtyard, dwellings reserved for the servants and a stable. The whole complex, which can be accessed through a single gate, is in a poor state of preservation and is deserving of a complete restoration for the grandeur of its architecture.
