Castello Marcellano lays amongst the gentle hills between Gualdo Cattaneo and Giano, in the province of Perugia. According to the tradition, the castle takes its origins from the members of the "Gens Marcella" (XLI legion of the Roman army) who inherited the lands as a reward for leaving. In historical sources and documents, however, the name appears in Marcellano acts, dating back to 1200, which showed that the castle was inhabited by about 700 people: its origins, hence, can be traced around the 12th century. Despite its location in a place not easy to reach, in 1219 the castle was occupied on behalf of Frederick II by Napoleon Coccorone, Ghibellines' general. Later, the property returned under the town of Todi with Guelphs'reign. At the end of 1500, Marcellano extended its social and political organization aligning with all the castles in Umbria, especially with the Todi ones. During the following years it was adorned with religious monuments and remarkable paintings, thanks to the patronage and to the authority of Bishop Ancaiani and to the activity of the local noble family Cori. After a brief period under the jurisdiction of the town of Collazzone, in 1861, Marcellano passed under the territoriality of the town of Gualdo Cattaneo, to which it still belongs.
