  2. Barattano Castle

The fortress was built in the 13th century and was originally named "Villa Sant'Angelo in Piscina", some centuries later it was given its current name "after the fraudulent people who lived in the place". Surrounded by thick walls (dating back to 1452) with a central keep and high defense towers, some of which were built on even higher levels, the castle is a good example of compact military architecture built for purely defensive purposes and deriving from the Roman castrum. In 1261, under the podestà (mayor) Filippo degli Ugoni of Brescia, Filippo di Barattano was the people's captain. In the second half of the 14th century the castle came under the jurisdiction of the Trinci family. In 1540 they sent a worker to the town of Perugia to build the Rocca Paolina. For centuries, the castle remained under the sovereignty of the town of Todi: in 1802 it was annexed to Gualdo Cattaneo, in 1815 to San Terenziano and in 1861 to Gualdo Cattaneo again. Well preserved, the castle remains fascinating for its structural morphology with its wide circle of walls and a medieval gate, narrow alleys and high towers, some of which show the remains of roofing works. Inside the castle it is possible to see a church, San Bartolomeo Church (13th century) with its frescoes dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, and two wooden angels dating back to 1500.
